I build stairs five days a week.

On weekends I build them for you.

Set out for your opening. Not trimmed to fit.

One fixed price, in writing.

Tell me about your stairs.

Straight flights to cantilevers, across Melbourne's west. From $2,200, built and installed.

What it costs

A straight flight starts at $2,200.

Built and installed. What moves it from there is how many steps there are, the timber, and whether the flight turns. Those are the only things that change the number, so they are the things I ask about.

01

MDF

From $2,200

The cheapest way to a solid flight, because it is built to be covered rather than looked at. Paint it, carpet it, or run engineered flooring over the treads. The most common replacement in the west.

02

Hardwood

Priced on your drawings

The one people notice, and still will in twenty years. Solid treads, risers, stringers and handrails, so it feels solid underfoot instead of sounding hollow. This is what I use when the stairs are meant to be seen.

03

Cantilever and spine

Quoted per job

The staircase people stop and look at. Treads off a structural wall with nothing underneath, or carried on one central beam. The spine flight further down is one I built, photographed on site. Not every house needs one.

The work

Set out on site, built to fit your opening.

Every flight is set out for the opening it is going into, and measured before a board is cut. Not ordered from a catalogue and trimmed to fit on the day.

  • You know the number before I start, and it does not move. One fixed price in writing, with the set out, the build, the install, the clean up and the guarantee inside it.
  • Your house is not a building site for weeks. The flight is built before it comes anywhere near you, so the disruption is the install and not the making.
  • If it is wrong, it is my problem and not yours. I come back and fix it free. That is the whole guarantee and it needs no small print.
  • Nobody rings you to close you. You have the number in writing and two months to sit on it. Timber prices move, so after that I would have to work it out again.

4Jobs a month

Who builds it

The same pair of hands, without the showroom.

Ten years on the tools as a carpenter and joiner, most of it building staircases for a company that sells them with a showroom, a sales team and an office on top of the price. CB Stairs is the same pair of hands without any of that.

The catch, and I would rather say it up front: I cap it at four jobs a month. Not a scarcity trick, just what one person can do properly around a full week of work. It is the reason the quote holds and the finish is right, and it means the calendar fills. If you have a date in mind, call early.

How it works

Five steps, and you can stop at any of them.

01

Send me the plans, or I come and look

You get a number without waiting on a site visit, because I can price a staircase off drawings.

02

We work the staircase out

Timber, shape, handrail, balustrade, finish. This is the part other people charge for.

03

One fixed price in writing

Everything in it: set out, build, install, clean up and the guarantee.

04

You decide

No follow up sales call. A deposit books the job and holds your date.

05

Then I measure up

Once the job is mine I come and measure the opening properly, before a board is cut. That is why the price holds.

Drag it across.

The same flight, the day it went in and how it looks once it is finished. The finished side is an example, put together to show what carpet and a plastered balustrade do to it, rather than a photograph taken on that job.

Questions

The things people ask before they call.

What does a new staircase cost?

A straight flight starts from $2,200, built and installed. What moves it from there is how many steps there are, the timber, and whether the flight turns.

Can you quote over the phone?

Not off a phone call, no. A staircase is set out to the opening it goes into, so a number guessed over the phone is worth nothing to either of us. Send me the plans and I can price it off those.

Do you charge for the design?

No. If you do not already know exactly what you want, we work the staircase out together as part of quoting the job. It is included in the price.

Do you do the handrail and balustrade as well?

Yes. Timber handrails, posts and balusters, supplied and installed, either as part of a new staircase or fitted to an existing flight that is loose, dated or no longer safe.

How long does the work take in my house?

The flight is built before it comes anywhere near your house, so the disruptive part is the install rather than weeks of noise. How soon I can start depends on what else is booked, and I will tell you that when you get the price rather than guess at it now.

Why only weekends?

I am on the tools five days a week building staircases for someone else. CB Stairs is the same pair of hands on a Saturday, without a showroom and a sales team on top of the price. The honest limit is four jobs a month, which is what one person can do properly around a full week of work.

What happens if something is not right?

I come back and fix it free. That is the whole guarantee and it needs no small print.

Get a price

Tell me about your stairs.

Fill in the form and you get one fixed price in writing, with nothing left to add later. If you have plans, say so in the last box and I will tell you where to send them. If you do not have plans, tell me roughly what you are after and where the stairs are going, and we will work it out from there.

I take four jobs a month, so if you have a date in mind, put it in. That is the one thing that decides whether I can fit you in.

I answer every enquiry within 24 hours. Would rather talk it through? Call 0485 676 867, Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 3pm.
